Donate by stock or IRA

Stock:
With over 60% of Americans owning securities, more people are giving stocks, bonds, and mutual funds in support of affordable housing. By donating securities to LowCountry Habitat, you can benefit from a tax savings that may allow you to donate more without an increased cost. Talk with your financial advisor, attorney, or accountant to determine if this is a good choice for you. For security and simplicity, we recommend that you make a direct transfer of securities to LowCountry Habitat's account.

To make a gift of a stock at LowCountry Habitat, please provide your broker with the following information.

Your broker will also need to know the name of the stock you wish to donate as well as the number of shares and instructions for designation of the funds (i.e. Foundation 1000, house sponsorship, etc.).

An acknowledgement from LowCountry Habitat will be sent crediting you with a gift of the average of the high and low for the day the stock was transferred into LowCountry Habitat's account. You may use this for tax purposes.

IRA:
For 2006 and 2007, the Pension Protection Act of 2006 means that IRA owners can donate up to $100,000 in each of these two years to qualified charitable organizations without tax penalty. In addition this amount transferred to a charity will count toward this year's minimum required distribution. Without this act, many taxpayers would have found it cost them to donate funds from an IRA, but the Pension Protection Act removes those restrictions making it easy to donate through IRA accounts.
